Dominican-American basketball player Charlie Villanueva has alopecia, a condition that results in hair loss, but the power forward wants to remind others in the same circumstances not to feel shame or suffer a lack of self-worth.
Villanueva has gone public about alopecia partly to remove the stigma associated with the affliction. The Dallas Mavericks player often meets with alopecia patients in various cities, usually before games, as part of his Charlie’s Angels program, affiliated with the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. Villanueva’s message to them is to keep believing in themselves and that it’s ok to look a little different.
